المباني الذكية هي المباني التي تستخدم التقنية (ليست تقنية المعلومات أو الإنترنت فقط) للتحكم في مكونات متعددة في المنزل، مثل: التكييف، والإضاءة، وأجهزة الإنذار، وكاميرات المراقبة...إلخ. وأصبحت هذه التقنية مطلباً لكثير من الراغبين في شراء أو بناء أي مبنى سكني أو تجاري جديد وذلك لعدة أسباب منها:
1) إمكانية التحكم في بعض أجهزة المبنى عن بعد، مثال على ذلك تشغيل التكييف أو الإنارة.

2) توفير الطاقة الكهربائية عن طريق استخدام تقنية الطاقة الشمسية وأنظمة إدارة التكييف الآلية.

3) أنظمة أمن ومراقبة، ومن الممكن استخدامها عن بعد.

4) توزيع بث القنوات التلفزيونية والتحكم بها.

وقد لا تكون تقنية المباني الذكية أخذت الحجم المستحق في السوق حاليا، ولكنها سوف تكون أساسية في أي مبنى خلال مدة لا تتجاوز خمس سنوات، وذلك بسبب تقدم هذه التقنية وخفض تكاليفها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك سوف تضاف الكثير من الخدمات الممكنة خلال السنوات القليلة القادمة، فعلى سبيل المثال، من الممكن إيصال معلومات الثلاجة المنزلية بإحدى شركات التسوق (سوبرماركت) بحيث يتم الطلب والتوصيل بطريقة آلية.
